The Importance of Food to Health

Food is a necessary ingredient to sustaining human life. It is also culturally defined the community experience, a family gathering point, personal history, exercise and activity, a component of wellness, a social event, currency, crafts, and employment. (Paraphrased from Chef Richard Weinroth)

Food is expensive – even with coupons and food stamps. It is even more expensive if you don’t ave a lot of money and do not qualify for this type of assistance.  I was at MEND (I know, you are not shocked) asking the staff how they address this for their clients.

  1. The Food Bank
  2. The Food Pantry (where other food banks come for food)
  3. The Hot Lunch Program
  4. Homeless Food Bags
  5. Diabetic Food Boxes
  6. Home Gardening Program
  7. La Collectiva
  8. Kid’s Food Education
  9. Cooking Classes

It seems they have already given this some thought.

I am a terrible gardener. This is just another painful reminder that I am adopted because my parents and grandparents and great grandparents all have had meaningful and fruitful (see what I did there?) relationships with plants. With that in mind, and because I feel comfortable at MEND, I gave #6 a hard look and decided to try the Home Gardening Program.

Created with Microsoft Fresh Paint
Hibiscus flower organs up close. It has boy and girl parts . I am glad it doesn’t shop at Target.

I took notes in the most Sonya way ever, I drew.

I have to say that they take this seriously and I already planted 4 different types of seeds. NExt I have to schedule a home site visit to see if I have room for a 4×8 garden plus soil delivery . I have 3 more weeks of classes.

Tell me why you this this might be a good or bad idea.

A Few Words on EBT vs Restaurant Meals Programs

The convienence store next door proudly displays “EBT  commonly known as CalFresh is accepted here”.

Please, please, please don’t use your cash aid money at the 7-11 store where everything costs more than at the store. A stick of string cheese is a dollar there. At a grocery store you can buy the package of 12 sticks for $3.00. They are not part of the restraunt Meals Program and they are not taking your Food Stamp funds as far as I can tell.

Understandably, when the money is free and just given to you without instruction, you are less emotionally involved in how it is spent. However, it is available for combination with coupons and then yourFree Food Money can be $700 instead of $300 if you work it correctly.

Also, Food stamp / Cal Fresh funds are available for use for hot meals at places like El Polo Loco and Jack in the Box so that you who are homeless, disabled or a senior citizen on Food Aid can have a hot meal. When you tell me thatyou can not go to an appointment I have set up for you because you “will miss the meal at the shelter”, I am not very sympathetic. You have the means to purchase other food. That was the point of giving you the aid.

$11 for 11.11.11 Veteran’s Day – a Suggested Donation

I know many of us will be spending money this Friday at Veteran’s Day sales. Can I suggest we also spend $11 to help the very veteran’s we are taking the day to honor?

Recently you have been hearing a lot about @MENDPOVERTY1  M.E.N.D   from me. Part of that is because I am enthralled that there is a place providing everything I have ever wanted to see in a community center – and it is all FREE to those who can not pay. Donations, of course, are accepted when they fit into the recipient’s budget.

Pacoima is far away from my hometown of Arcadia – and I would do anything to replicate the services closer to home. Until I figure out how to do that, I want to share a little more about why MEND speaks to me.

  • If you live near MEND and don’t have enough money to feed your family for the month: MEND can give you a box of food
  • If it is the middle of the day and you need a hot meal : MEND will serve one to you…and it will be real food that smells and tastes good.
  • If you never graduated High school and need the education to get a better job, or as an example for your children: MEND offers the classes.
  • If poverty and other issues are causing you emotional troubles, free therapy is available
  • Need a dental or vision or medical appointment, real life, certified professionals will examine and treat you.
  • Need somewhere to pour your good intentions and time into: MEND is almost completely staffed and run by volunteers.
  • Do you want to learn to sew? MEND has a class for that.
  • Are you homeless without a place to take a shower? Two days a week MEND opens it’s hot showers for free.
  • Need nicer clothing for your children or family to wear for school or to work? MEND has a boutique. A donation is suggested, but if it isn’t possible – it is also free.
  • Too overwhelmed to know where and how to apply for public benefits? the Intake staff will hep you apply and direct you.

So, now it almost Veteran’s day and they are telling me that many of their clients are Veterans. At least 5 of the Veteran’s they served last week were homeless.

Like I said, all of the services to the Veteran’s (and the neighborhood) are free. And speaking of FREE, I am free because people were willing to sign up and protect this country and fight for my freedoms. Freedom is free to most of us with a suggested donation that some of us serve in the military and armed forces.

So: go to MEND’s web page and look for this form.

Meals on a Food Stamp Budget

the         A.P.         ran an article  by PERVAIZ SHALLWANI on how three successful restraunt owners would plan meals on less than $70 a week for a family of four.  Read the entire article here:
I am posting some of the best bits of advice.
Jose Garces suggests that budget shoppers start in the grocer’s ethnic aisle, where the products generally are less expensive. Budget cooking “traces back to roots in ethnic cooking,” he says. “If you look back in history, people had to survive, and using inexpensive products became ways to survive and using those inexpensive products became traditional dishes.”

Processed foods may sometimes seem less expensive, but they are harder to stretch and generally not as healthy. Bill Telepan of Telepan restaurant in New York also looked for more seasonal foods, which generally are cheaper.

Planning and careful shopping were key, as was a willingness to recast leftovers. They also championed chicken as an inexpensive and versatile protein.

Aggressive use of coupons, sales and bulk shopping!
