All you need to know about the Tap bus card

Do you remember having to have exact change and buying $0.2 cent paper transfers as you rode across town on the bus?

Those days are long gone for any transit system and a new plan is in place. It is called the TAP card because you “tap” it against a big blue button and the smart chip inside it automatically sends information and deducts the balance to your account. Neat-o!

The TAP card replaces your traditional paper passes and premium stamps. You’ll need to purchase a TAP card to continue to get the same reduced-fare discount or standard pass at the rate you’re currently enjoying. In addition to storing passes, a TAP card can be used to store cash value, or you can load both cash value and passes onto your card.

The advantages of using a TAP card instead of cash include the convenience of never having to worry about carrying exact change and the added security of balance protection. You may load cash value onto your TAP card at any of the locations below:

You can use your EBT card to buy the pass with your cash amount at the store or TAP machine, but not at a ticket window.

Reduced-fare passes are now available to load onto your TAP card!

Whether you’re an existing Senior, Disabled or Student rider, or a new rider who meets program eligibility requirements, now’s the time to move to TAP and take advantage of the card’s built-in advantages, like free balance protection and smart-chip enabled remote fare loading.

With paper passes, stamps and student ID cards no longer being sold, existing reduced-fare pass holders must obtain a TAP card to continue receiving their reduced-fare rate.

Applicant eligibility varies by municipality (e.g. senior discount participation begins at 60, 62, or 65 years depending on the transit system), so be sure to check the specific reduced-fare eligibility requirements for the lines you ride.

Senior TAP ID Card

Seniors 62 years or older (60+ in Santa Clarita Transit District and Pasadena ARTS) qualify for a Senior TAP ID Card. There is no charge for the card itself, but you must supply a full-face photo (1″ X 1-1/4″ or 2” X 2”) along with valid ID showing proof of age (California ID, California Drivers License, passport, or a birth certificate accompanied by any photo ID). You can apply for your Senior TAP ID Card at any Metro or participating Municipal Customer Center locations. LACTOA Disabled TAP ID Card

To obtain your LACTOA Disabled TAP ID Card, you must provide proof of eligibility or a Medicare card. Completed applications, a full-face photo, required documentation and a processing fee can be submitted at any Metro or participating Municipal Customer Center location or mailed to the TAP Reduced Fare Office, One Gateway Plaza, M.S. 99-PL-4, Los Angeles, CA 90012-2952. College/Vocational TAP ID Card

To qualify for a College/Vocational discount, you must complete the College/Vocational TAP ID application available at select schools, Metro or participating Municipal Customer Center locations or online. Submit the completed application at any Metro or participating Municipal Customer Center location or mail it to the TAP Reduced Fare Office, One Gateway Plaza, MS 99-PL-4, Los Angeles, CA, 90012-2952. Undergraduate and graduate students must provide proof of enrollment in an accredited school in Los Angeles County for a minimum of 12 units or 12 hours of in-classroom study per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months. If you are enrolled in a summer program that meets for less than 3 months and/or 1 units, you can still qualify only if you met the eligibility requirements in the preceding spring term.

K-12 Student TAP Card

Student TAP card applications are now available. Once the TAP application is completed and submitted, a student can expect to receive a TAP card in 6-8 weeks.
