Take a poll on The Homeless and their money

  1. Being what many would call homeless I believe I have a dog in the fight as far as this issue is concerned. I voted for any way they want but can understand how some may disagree with this. If it is a matter of money received through some government check I believe the money should go through a management system of some kind. There are a number of people I know who get anywhere from $600 to $1200 a month which is blown with 7 days. Had this money been managed the recipients would have be off the street long ago.

Having worked with people in that position, I don’t think it’s plausible to *tell* people how to spend their money. It’s costly to have “trustees” oversee money management for those on benefits as well as highly intrusive.

That said, those who requested such aid, I found it generally unavailable here in Toronto. One person I know has been trying to find such assistance, for several years. In the case of some of my past client base, I sometimes made arrangements that their rent be “pay direct” when they wished it, so at least that was covered.

Some agencies have been caught with their fingers in the cookie jar as well, leading to serious distrust around this situation.

That aside, if someone requested such assistance I believe it *should* be available on a contract basis. Sooner or later however, it must come down to people learning how to budget and seeing the benefit, therein.

For any such program there also needs to be a powerful overseeing body to ensure that no funds are misdirected, or misplaced.
