What Color is a Homeless Person. Reality vs Perception

We were crowded around a computer in the corner of a transitional housing apartment building on Wednesday Night searching for pictures of homeless people. Everyone with me had been homeless in the past 10 years. 2 of them were African American, one Hispanic and two were Caucasian. I was making my point that the typical portal of a homeless person is a middle aged or older African American Male.

We Googled and Binged and then walked out to the corner of Seventh and Stanford to look at the actual street. The computer and the people did not equate.

It took three pages of surfing before I found a picture of a homeless child. but 27-43% are children in families.

33-50% of the homeless are female – but among the visible homeless – it looks more like 25%. This is because many females have children with them and live in missions, or with friends, or in more sheltered locations such as under bridges.

I included a chart to how you the ethnic breakdown of the population.

Race General Population Homeless Population
Latino 47% 33%
White 30% 14%
African American 9% 50%
Asian/Pacific Islander 12% 2%
Other 2% Less than 1%

Source: Institute for the Study of Homelessness & Poverty at the Weingart Center

When The Bold and the Beautiful showed the actual population living on the row and in the URM, the demographic difference between the homeless and the typical cast of characters was evident and discussed .

“Forget what I said the other day, yesterday was the most black people Ive ever seen on the show. I lost count. Overall it was a pretty good show”-Cheap21 on boards.soapoperanetwork.com

“I  know this is well-intentioned…but it’s ridiculously out-of-place on B&B. It’ll make the return to lily-white”-PJ on boards.soapoperanetwork.com

The reality is that half of the people who are homeless are African American; not most of them, or all of them, but half of them.

CBS’s the Bold and the Beautiful is set in Beverly Hills. 85.1% of the people who live there are Caucasian (white). Only 1.80% are African American.

It is not racial profiling for a show set in a predominantly white city to have a predominantly white cast.  When the show went on location – the demographic reflected the population of where they went.

I don’t suggest we all take pictures of every person we see who is not housed and then tag them so that they show up more accurately represented on the internet – but I am suggesting we look at ourselves and wonder – “If I were homeless, would I look like my idea of a homeless person?”

Bradley Bell “His Mama Raised Him Right”

That is the best thing someone can say about a person. It is especially telling when someone who sees you on a regular basis shares this opinion with strangers. Last week I heard this about Bradley Bell.

Bradley Bell - photo belongs to cbs.com

To be honest, this one character reference was the reason I gave a second thought to CBS showing the streets of Skid Row on The Bold and the Beautiful. It made me hope that the perspective shown would be accurate and sincere.

As far as I can tell, his friend is correct. I have Googled, Binged and researched him the best I could and  can not find a bad word printed about him (so either he has a crack legal staff or his character is as stated).  I tend to believe the man has a social conscience and the bravery to let it loose in the world.

Bradley is the son of the creators of The Bold and the Beautiful, William J. and Lee Phillip Bell. Or should I say that the creators of Bradley also made a television series? Either way, Mr Bell is both Bold and Beautiful.

Why are you homeless?  According to an interview with TV Guide, Mr. Bell wrote this question down and kept it at his desk for years until he found the right time and story line to present it. In presenting the answers, he took care to find a variety of people who came to homelessness from several paths. He presented them with dignity and connected with one of the best service providers ; The Union Rescue Mission. When I say connected with the URM, I mean it. He did not just show the outside of the building or mention it in passing. Mr. Bell let his work mingle with that of the Union Rescue Mission and I have heard that The Bold and the Beautiful will be serving Thanksgiving dinner there – most likely unfilmed and without pomp.

For tastefully bringing an unpleasant circumstance, that is becoming a reality for many families, into a fantasy show – and for inspiring praise from those who know him – Bradley Bell is our Hero of the Week.

Welcome Bold and The Beautiful Fans

Wow, Bold and the Beautiful fans are super tech savvy and plugged in! I saw the link back to here from one of the chat board sites and then my stats went out of control. I assume it is all of you visiting here.

Take a minute, tell me what you think and ask questions. I am having a great time reading your threads and conversations. http://boards.soapoperanetwork.com/topic/37729-bb-october-discussion-thread/

http://tayphanie.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=7458

Two questions that have come up are:

“How is the show “making history” and “are they treating the subject too lightly“?

Today and tomorrow the show is making history because they are mixing in REAL stories (More real than a “reality show”) in with the story line.  A fictitious character is asking very real people how they became homeless.

Is it too light? Well, no. If the show jumped completely into the theme of homelessness – you would all jump ship. I certainly would and I do this for a living and a hobby.  By giving you a different but accurate introduction to what skid row and the shelters are really like – The Bold and the Beautiful is inviting you to taste test the issue. They will return to the story line over and over again and go through the layers of what homelessness is really about . However, now that your appetite is whetted IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADDRESSING THE SUBJECT – IT WON’T BE SO FOREIGN TO YOU.

oops, cap lock. sorry about that.

But, seriously, if you want to know more about homelessness and how you can help – no matter where you are – read my blog for ideas or leave me a comment or shoot me an email or twitter. I am happy to be your tour guide - and look for me to join your chat board as Princess12Toes :)

Oh, and tell me what you thought of today and tomorrow’s episodes. Please and Thank you!

Should Kids Know About Skid Row?

I went to LAMP to look for Linda and met up with Anne, Robert, Maria, and Mr. Rice on Skid Row (The “Politically Correct” name is Central City East).  They have known my daughter and I for almost  10 years. Even though I was just there two weeks ago, there was a lot of catching up to do. Everyone had to take turns feeling my pregnant belly and had parenting advice to give me.

“When that baby is born, we will come visit you for a change. You can’t bring a baby down here!“  And you know what, really, that is fine with me.  Having gone to visit each of them when they have been ill or in the hospital – a little turn around is fair play: I have written their names on my hospital visitor preferences.

Skid Row is no place for babies – but I contend that it is no place for adults eitherSo when exactly should I tell this new baby about the living conditions of some of Mommy’s friends?

Where do Homeless People Come From“  With Jackie, it was an evolving discussion - like ”The talk” on where babies come from. It was natural with her because she is an exceptional person. She was the only first grader with pictures of MLK and JFK on her wall. As a toddler she would walk up to strangers and hug them,  lecture about smoking being bad for their health, if my mom lost her in Toys R Us she could always be found by the Nintendos – being held by the gang members and playing video games with them (This literally gave my mom fits!), and more than once she told me she needed her Juice Box and then walked across the park to leave it with someone she saw sleeping under a tree.

All People are Created Equal – they just don’t all live in equally nice houses“. I think that this is the approach I am going to take with the baby. I hope that he or she will not always know that there are homeless people sleeping on the streets – because I hope that workable solutions for housing everyone are found and implemented before the baby is old enough to truly understand what Jackie has learned.

What are your thoughts?

As seen on TV: CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful

Look for Linda Harris on the show Oct. 28th or 29th. She is one of over 25 residents of Skid Row in Los Angeles hired to be extras when the soap filmed on location.  The episode will have reality mixed with the story. Linda and other residents are interviewed by Stephanie Forrester and answer the question “Why are you homeless?”.

Linda Harris talks about being on The Bold and the Beautiful

I went to Skid Row to visit with Linda tonight. We discussed her experience filming. She has been following the story line for years and  remembers when “Stephanie Forrester” first went to Skid Row and was happy to see her return.

It’s like this woman was blind and now she sees, like in the gospel song“.

She said Stephanie was blinded by  a stereotype of the people who live on the streets . Given the chance she would like to say “You don’t know me. Just because I am black and poor – you don’t know what I do. You can’t know what I feel. Don’t think I do drugs. You don’t know what I do!  I can not afford to live in Beverly Hills. I can afford to live here“. This statement also happens to be what the character is told in the show.

Linda is an actor in the L.A. Poverty Department. Her favorite exercise is interviewing other residents of the area and asking them about their stories. Then they put on performances where they become the people they interviewed. It is a lesson in compassion as much as it is a way to hone her skills. She is hoping that the episodes airing Thursday and Friday will be a lesson in compassion for the audience.

What does Linda think it would take to end homelessness?

  1. Mean it when you say you want to help. Don’t say you want to help me because you want to feel better or say ‘Look what I did.”
  2. Show us what to do.  Don’t tell us  to ‘Go to that building, fill out some form’! come with us.”
  3. Don’t punish people for being hard to help.  We are not perfect people – are you perfect? We might want to drink, some of us are addicts, and none of us need to be treated like children”.

What she thinks of The Bold and the Beautiful discussing homelessness.

She thinks it is good that The Bold and the Beautiful is showing homelessness and that they are doing it  right, with dignity with truth. Personally I think the Union Rescue Mission had much to do with the truth in how the story is presented and I have a growing respect for Brad Bell who writes and produces the show.

Look for Linda, the URM, Glady’s Park and watch as the character of Stephanie Forrester finds a new purpose in life by helping those in need. It’s a feeling I know many great people share.

Watch the show, look for my friend Linda and talk among yourselves.

Study out on Los Angeles’ Safer Cities Initiative

“Recognizing that homelessness is not a crime and addressing its underlying causes” is one of the best approaches to policing areas with high levels of homelessness. – Alex Vitale and Michael White

The study of 8 years of crime statistics says that Los Angeles reduced the crime amongst the homeless and did not simply spread it out so it looked less frequent.  Good job!

In case you are new to the party – that is not always what happens and the residents of skid row are group together as criminals. Savor this statement “homeless people frequently engaging in various forms of crime and disorder” …

What form of ORDER do you think is appropriate for someone who has no bed, no chair, no shower or toilet, no place to store food or clothing and lives among others in the same situation – some with untreated mental health issues and others actively under the influence of drugs and alcohol?

The study, however, went on to say that it was not just the policing that reduced the crime. It was the impact of a variety of social services meeting those same needs I just listed.

So – to be clear, special training by the LAPD made a wonderful change – but it was more effective because of The Midnight Mission, Union Rescue Mission, LAMP, The Weingart Center, LA County Department of Mental Health, DPSS and all the other services provided to residents in the area.
